Sara Mosle and Robert Coles are two individuals who become exposed to volunteerism because of specific circumstances yet they also encounter issues of extraordinary mismatch throughout their work. The term “mismatch,” has been applied to biological, psychological and social settings; regardless of the scenario, the outcomes of a mismatch can potentially do more harm than good. Mosle, a middle-aged white woman and journalist residing in a well off neighborhood in New york, becomes a mentor for several children from low-income communities. Coles, a white psychiatrist, pursues an in-depth study of school desegregation through observations of black youth organizations during the Civil Rights era. The reasons our group is interested in initiating this project is because all of us, whether through Greenwood’s Outdoor Education program or during the summers, have been able to experience the feeling of camp and the “home away from home” effect. We believe that there is nothing similar to the home away from home affect and we want to be able to help give this feeling to others. Amici Camping Charity is a charity that works to send children of all ages attend camps, and are currently partnered with over 25 camps including camps that Greenwood is partners with such as Medeba and Kilcoo. Be the change you wish to see in the world; Mahatma Gandhi's words of wisdom still ring true to me in my everyday life. His words invoke me to look within myself and evaluate how my good deeds can somehow be powerful enough to change the world. Volunteering at Buckner Shoes for Orphan Souls kindled a fire within me and made me realize that I will not tolerate being a bystander in the world; I must be proactive in order to see results. This center allowed me to see how simply packing, sorting, and shining shoes can help a young child's get to school easier, allow a young soccer play to sign up for their local team, or protect a child from walking on harsh terrain while trying to collect water. The reason why I volunteer is because I wish for the child's troubles to be nonexistent, I want to live in a world where people don’t have to worry about having a function pair of shoes.…

When volunteering at West Minnehaha it made me realize things that I didn’t pay attention to before going in. The point was to build relationships, problem solve, what to do in a conflict situation, and step outside of my comfort zone. I learned how to do every single one of those things. I realized that the kids are in need of someone who they can look up to and a dependable person who they can count on. For example, I was looking after a few kids that were doing homework and when walking around I hear a conversation of two kids.…

When I decided to volunteer at the Del Amo Gardens Care Center, I wasn’t quite sure if I was emotionally ready. In March of 2013, my grandpa suffered a very severe stroke. It caused so much damage that it paralyzed half of his body, so we had to put him in a nursing home. Shortly after starting my volunteering, however, any negativity faded away as I was eager to assist with the activities.…

Through multiple volunteer shifts at the Credit Valley Hospital in the cardiovascular and medicine departments, I have grown significantly from the challenges faced in the stressful environment, the biggest lesson being efficient self-reliance in unpredictable situations. I also contribute in the annual planning of an environmental-awareness event called BogFest where I advocate for lesser-acknowledged issues. The extracurriculars I participate in include HOSA as a member in the biomedical laboratory science cluster, Science Club as a general member, French Club as an executive member and band as a bassist. My extracurricular involvement demonstrates my enthusiasm for learning and…

In my initial phase of volunteering at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, I spent 24 hours learning to professionally transport and communicate with patients. Following training, I commenced my role as a hands-on-care volunteer at DFCI. I currently provide cancer patients with hand massage as they undergo their infusion. IVs are often placed in various regions of the hand so I learn to adapt to differing circumstances to maximize the care and relaxation each patient receives.…

We spent a whole day at my school doing simple tasks such as garden cleaning, moving old furniture, covering graffiti, repainting old walls and stairwells. In the end, volunteering had a huge impact not only on me but also the community around me. It enabled me to connect with my community and make my school a better place. I realized that helping out with the simplest and smallest tasks can make a drastic difference in society. If we were to lose physical space, people would surrender their desire to obtain public good.…

If only there would have been more people volunteering, then so much more people could have been helped. And if more people can be help, then the suffering on earth can be ease. The big problem is that everyone is so busy with their personal life that they forget about the importance of helping others. A positive aspect I saw was that those who were already volunteering were really dedicated and kind hearted. I believe they are making a big impact on every person they touched and made it a task to spread their kindness.…

To my surprise, I found myself somewhere I never visualized myself being on a Friday night, actually, a place I never expected I would spend any night to be exact, surrounded by fifty or sixty men; of all different races, ages, and religions. I had overwhelming feelings of reconsideration and anxiety flowing through my body. I was wondering if these men would look at me different because of how I dressed or spoke. Nevertheless, I tried to convince myself everybody here was equal, and that I was not superior to the men here were.…

During my two volunteer experiences I participated in for the service learning portion of this class, I had the opportunity to witness many different walks of life. I was taken in on a side of poverty I’ve never before seen, and on a very intimate level. My first volunteer experience this semester was at a local food pantry, the Pratt-Quigley center. The neighborhood around the food pantry seemed very run down and poor. Shortly after arriving there, we were directed to the room where all the food was stored after it had been donated, waiting to be sorted.…
