How Bad Do You Want It? In the book To Tell the Truth Freely, we are exposed to the history and the various incidents that led to the creation of the Anti-lynching Crusade. This crusade was created by Ida B. Wells, due to her passion for justice. Well’s was born during the Reconstruction period, which was the transition from slavery to freedom. The changes Ida endured, increased the evolution of racial equality. The background information on lynching, established by Well’s is one of the leading reasons for the evacuation of Memphis in 1892. During this time period, The Progressive Era began as a social movement and transformed into a political movement. Although the laws were being passed to benefit African Americans, they weren’t effective. Ida B. Well’s continued to fight for equality and integration. Creating the anti-lynching movement. The movement was created to stop the lynching of African Americans individuals. The movement were partnered with various organizations to fight against the act of lynching.
Using her editorials to speak on the social and political problems, the Free Speech was soon destroyed. On February 27, 1892 the angry whites gathered to destroy the printing press, furniture, trashed its office and left a note saying “anyone trying to publish the paper again would be punished with death.” After learning about the destruction in Memphis, threats begin to transpire. Wells recorded if they ever see her again ”they would bleed my face and hang me in front of the courthouse.” As she left the South she was transformed from a journalist to a public figure. Starting a new life, she had to transform to the new
