The majority of people in America aren't Native American. But we can’t forget about them. When we have parades in honor of Columbus, it is no wonder many Native American people protest. We are celebrating a man who slaughtered many, many of their people. According to New America Media, “Christopher Columbus was the first American terrorist . And as indigenous people and social justice activists across the nation courageously speak the truth about history, the rest of America is bound to learn this glaring truth, too. Yes, that is true, he started the trade of avocados, tobacco, corn, beans, tomatoes, and smallpox.
People seem to leave that last one out. He killed so many people because of the diseases he spread. Not only did he kill more Native American’s because of this, but it wasn’t just one disease that he spread, Columbus spread 30 diseases. “ new infectious diseases wiped out a staggering 236,000 indigenous people by 1517, nearly 95% of their population.” I know he didn’t purposely do this.
