Having suicidal thoughts in an age where you are just becoming an adult shows the causes of many young teen tragedies due to the judgmental society that occurs today. The reason behind suicidal thoughts are the ignorance of teen health and parental ignorance. Teens face many issues because of the lack of attention they receive from their guardians which is causing them to obtain many negative thoughts about themselves. In today 's society, there are multiple novels, movies and articles that discuss the issue of teen violence such as the sharp novelist Anna Quindlen argues in her essay,” The “C” Word In The Hallways”, about the importance of teen health and how it should be taken more seriously. Initially, Weir includes a scene when Neil’s father goes to Welton and walks into Neil’s room telling him he is taking too many extra curricular activities. As well as, that he should drop school. Neil says that he is the assistant editor this year and he say’s it 's not fair. Mr. Perry asks to speak to Neil privately and says, “ don’t you ever dispute me in public do you understand”, Neil replies with, “father I never disputed you”, his father responds with,” after you finish medical school and your on your own, then you can do what you damn please” (Weir). The conversation between Neil and his father weakens him and it symbolizes how Neil had to follow his father 's wishes and not his own. This is an example of parental pressure because Neil 's father is forcing his son to focus on medical school, but ignores his son 's ambitions which causes him to stress . Holden did not focus in school, unlike Neil who cared much about his education and future. Additionally, Salinger states,” the worst he’ll do, he’ll give me hell again,and then he’ll send me to that goddam military school,” (Salinger 166). Holden says this quote to show that his dad also puts pressure on him because he had been kicked out of more than one school due to his substandard grades.
