Trail Crew Research Paper

An effective leader is the first one to get up and the last one to eat and the last one to bed. A true leader is someone who doesn’t undertake the strenuous job of leading for the glory and admiration, but for the sense of joy and accomplishment his team feels afterward. Through my experiences with Venture Crew, a co-ed branch of the Boy Scouts, I have learned firsthand the definition of servant leadership; putting your groups’ wellbeing over your own benefit. Leaders shouldn’t bark orders or only oversee the work, leaders need to work with their team and pitch in to help reach the goal. When I was as NYLT (National Youth Leadership Training), I learned how to cultivate my ability to be a leader; you have to listen to everyone in the group in order to find common ground to help facilitate the group’s actions. …show more content…
Effective leaders, with their sense of respectability, responsibility, and initiative, have the capability to lead others in the right direction, but when the time is right, the leader knows to take a step back and let the members of the group lead. I had the privilege to be a part of a program called Trail Crew, where you can sign up to build trails at Philmont Scout Ranch. Upon my arrival, I met my crew, the people with which I would spend the next 14 days in the backcountry. The first week consisted of building a new trail at Chase Ranch, while during the second week we were able to enjoy hiking in the New Mexico mountains. During the working week, we took turns being the leader.
