In the profession of social work, emphasis is placed on theory being applied to practice. Essentially, theories are important in the social work profession because they examine human behaviors and how the environment may have an impact on a client’s behavior. In this analysis, the psychological and social dimensions is used for the transpersonal perspective to provide an understanding of the psychological developments of spirituality and the spiritual dimension is used to provide an understanding how the Lees used their spiritual aspect in their daily lives. The systems perspective is used to provide an understanding of the Merced Community Medical Center (MCMC) and how its systems operate at a macro level.

Both of these theories explain how people interact with their environment and how the systems can affect the client. Ludwig Von Bertalanffy was a biologist associated with this theory. This scholar contributed to the social work perspective by viewing systems as a whole, and how other systems interact and have relationships with one another.
