What is one of the first things people look at when meeting a person? Their smile, when meeting a person for the first time everyone wants to have a nice bright and clean smile. Dentists are the people who help take care of that nice smile and help keep teeth from rotting away, as well as aiding to self-confidence by making smiles better. Two qualities that would make me strive as a dentist would be that I am open to helping others, I prefer to build people up, and I help boost their self- confidence. Another career that aides self-confidence is a plastic surgeon. Plastic surgeons help people who are unhappy with their appearance, no matter what caused them to be unhappy. With that being said, a typical day in the life of a dentist is to diagnose and treat problems related to a patient 's teeth, gums, and other parts of the mouth; and provide advice and instruction on how to take care of them (BLS). Dentists have to have certain skills such as, dexterity, being detail oriented, leadership, organization, patience, physical stamina, and problem solving (BLS). Not only are certain skills required, but so are certain degrees, classes, and professional tests such as, chemistry and biology complete before dental school, a bachelors degree in either chemistry or biology, and undergraduates apply to dental school must take the Dental Admissions Test (BLS). Also, depending on what field of dentistry someone goes into, will determine how many years of training they need (BLS). However, those years of education will pay off because the more knowledge about dentistry one has, will help them become a more well-rounded and smart dentist. Plus, dentists make between on average, between $82,860 and $170,110, but some dentists can make more or less depending on how business goes. With that being said, the best places to be a dentist are North Carolina, Delaware, Alaska, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, and many more ("Dentists, General"). Furthermore, the field of dentistry has employment increasing 18% by 2024 …show more content…
Not to mention it fits closely with my personality of being an understanding and helpful person who is easy to get along with and talk to. On the other hand, I do not imagine myself as a plastic surgeon because even though they make a ton of money, I do not think that I could perform a tummy tuck or a butt lift without being nauseous. Not only do the surgeries make me nauseous, but to become a dentist it requires less schooling and training than a surgeon. Correspondingly, becoming a dentist at Wake Forest is most likely better than becoming a dentist at Villanova because of the fact that North Carolina is one of the best places to open up a dental practice, or join one, yet it is so far away from Erie and very expensive. In conclusion, I absolutely think being a dentist is a close to perfect job for me, and Wake Forest University is the better school to become that at about the same cost, and the only drawback is that it is 8 hours
