Many people across the world are affected by Autism Spectrum Disorder, which is a disorder in the brain and causes many effects to their everyday life. Autism Spectrum Disorder is also known as Pervasive Disorder (Mayo Clinic Staff). There are two different forms of Autism Spectrum Disorder. Sub-actions to social interactions are things such as failure to respond to his or her name. Another sub-action would be the total dislike to hug or be close to anyone. Lack of eye contact or trouble with speech are a few more sub-actions to autistic children’s interactions with others (Mayo Clinic Staff). A few more signs of autistic behavior could be the lack of understanding questions or directions, and lack of emotional expressions (Mayo Clinic Staff). Autistic children may lack in social skills, but many make up for it in intelligence. Some children do very well and excel in school, while others do not. Most children with autism are covered under the special education umbrella of education. Underneath the special education program, each child will have an individual education plan (IEP). An IEP is written for each child specifically and defines the reasonable expectations for achievement and how to determine the success of the child. The IEP includes several points. The first piece of information on the IEP is the current performance of the child. It states how the child is doing in school at the current time. Next, it contains annual goals. These goals are ones that the child can reasonably accomplish in a year. In addition, it also contains special education and related services that the child will receive. This would be services such as counseling, speech therapy, or even transportation. Next, is the participation with non-disabled children (Bennice 64). The IEP states how much time the child will be in a regular classroom with children who are not disabled.
