The Unattainability of the American Dream
The American Dream is the concept that the whole nation was founded on. Yet, it is not a reality. How ironic? The American Dream is a belief where every American individual has equal chances to gain success and prosperity through determination and hard work. In other words, the American Dream is this “perfect picture” where everyone supposedly wants to be in it. The picture is of a perfect family with two children, a nice house, and a nice car in a lovely neighborhood where everyone bakes cookies for each other and exchange gifts on holidays. Unfortunately, the majority of Americans are not able to be in that picture and not because it is too many people to fit in one picture! Women are not paid equally as men in America. “Despite the fact that women are now more educated than men, they still earn 79 cents to every dollar a man makes, a number that has remained largely unchanged for about a decade” (Chia). Although, women complete the job the same way as men, nevertheless when it comes to the paycheck it is different. The disadvantage is even worse for colored women. “New figures show the gender pay gap will cost the average American woman $430,480 over the course of her career, with the disparities skyrocketing for women of color” (Chia). The gender gap is different for each woman because locations and nationalities come into play. “Latina women suffer the most in Washington D.C., where the pay gap stands at an eye-watering $1.8million, according to a new analysis of census data by the National Women's Law Center” (Chia). Women in different states lose a different amount of money. “Louisiana is the worst offender with women reporting an average loss of $671,840. Florida, reports the smallest gap at $248,120”
