Vica had gotten booked and detained and sent to the county jail for failing to show up at her court hearing. She then wrote her mother and told her, that Immigration has come to see her, to detain her. She then transferred to the San Pedro Detention Center. Olga was dismayed by the whole turn of events. She was so worried about her daughter, and would send her as much money as she could. Vica’s main priority was to get her AIDS medicine for her treatment. “When Vica called me, she would tell me they treated her and the other transgender detainees very badly…. And she would call and tell me they wouldn’t give her medical care. She was scared because they weren’t giving her the medication she needed.” (Orner 111) Vica was horribly mistreated in the jail, not only by the other prisoners but the employees at the prison too.
