Research was completed to discover the degree of seriousness that abuse has become in the workplace. A search for quantitative research articles for this subject was performed using CINAHL complete, MEDLINE, and Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition databases. By using keywords, such as abuse of nurses and workplace violence, in the search bar of the databases, many articles were found that were consistent with the research objective versus using the keywords verbal abuse of nurses. The chosen articles were limited to workplace violence occurring in a hospital setting to healthcare workers.
Upon reviewing the articles, it was discovered that out of 220 nurses and doctors surveyed, 76.2% of healthcare workers reported some degree of abuse during the 12-month research period. 15.9% of healthcare workers reported verbal abuse was a daily occurrence. Each of the four articles used in this research performed different designs to receive valid information: cross-sectional correlational, retrospective cross-sectional, systematic review with meta-analysis, and descriptive, correlational. Even though the design may differ, all the articles provided statistics on the occurrences of workplace violence. Valid tools such as, questionnaires, surveys, and review of other quantitative research articles, were used to obtain information. Self- reporting tools and sample participation provided limitations to the research. All articles reported high percentages of episodes of workplace
