Voices in the Dark The hatred between the kingdoms of Sharkton and Delamína is well known. It had been that way since the Fourth Dark War. No one knows this hatred better than my father; he loathed Delamína with a burning passion that would never die. Well, that’s not true. He had died “accidentally” last night after he fell (was pushed) down the grand staircase. Now, I’m free to slay dragons, burn villages and be a total womanizer without my father telling me “No”. So said a Washington Post reporter in 2008, “Councilwoman Deanna Flin is a fresh face and a breath of fresh air in D.C. politics.” In the eyes of her colleagues (boozing old school boys with potty mouths and potbellies), she personified Hillary Clinton, the little engine that would, if she could, overturn the political status quo. “Too big for her britches,” said one, which struck Deanna as funny, but not in the ha-ha-ha way.…

“We penetrated deeper and deeper into the heart of darkness” (43). This is one of many passages where Marlow uses darkness to tell his personal story about the journey he took through the Congo. This quote has both a literal and figurative meaning, where the reader must go beyond the text to truly comprehend the message of the author, Joseph Conrad. When reading this passage, it may appear that as Marlow and his crew go deeper into the Congo, the men become savage-like due to all the darkness, or evil, they are surrounded by. Joseph Conrad’s novella, Heart of Darkness, is a story about two men’s realization of their own inner evil.…
