In today’s society, increasing competition has made people strive towards success more than ever before. Whether it be jobs, education, sports, or life in general, people want to be at their prime. However, no great personality has succeeded without help from somewhere. Michael Strahan’s motivational novel, Wake up Happy , summarizes eighteen of his best tips to lead a successful life. Some more relatable than others, Strahan’s tips are applicable to mostly everyone. As a graduating student, some of these tips have had a strong impact on my thoughts on life after high school. Strahan talks about grit, desire, and dicipline in his third rule. He says, “Grit, desire, and descipline are free and the only equipment you need to startjust about any rndeavor you’ll set out to do.” Strahan emphasizes how important discipline is to achieve something. As a student, I’m always looking for the easy way out: How do I get an A without putting in effort? How do I write a paper without reading the book? I’ve realized that this ideology has worked in high school In his seventh rule, Strahan talks about how his marriage failed and how his kids had to go back to Germany. He adresses the fact …show more content…

Everyday seems the same, but when I look back, everything’s different. I’ve realized that I’ve done nothing productive to help me in the long run. “There is no guidebook to success, therefore, we all write our own.” As the Salutatorian of Sacred Heart High School’s Class of 2007, I uttered these words during my speech in hopes of inspiring my classmates. Those words certainly inspired me, as I earned one out of only four Biochemistry degrees awarded in Manhattan College four years later and, thereafter, as I advanced up the corporate ladder in my first job with Conair Corporation. However, these achievements seem minor compared to my accomplishments during my first few months with Shiseido Americas Corporation, which resulted in my fastest promotion to date.…

A sentence that really stood out to me was, " Even as a child she had lived her own small life within herself. At a very early period she had apprehended instinctively the dual life - that outward existence which conforms, the inward life which questions. "(Chapter 7) To me, this shows an entirely new side of Edna, one readers weren't really exposed to before. This paragraph was really well written because it not only gives context (Edna's childhood), but it also exposes a conflict Edna has dealt with her entire life.…

Throughout high school I knew a few kids that were extremely intelligent, but when it came to social interaction with peers or elders they would not be able to maintain a regular conversation. I think that some people who are extremely intelligent often have so much going on inside their head that they just can’t get it all out at once because, if they try to it would all come out as nonsensical gibberish. If grit would have been taught to someone while they were young or in elementary school, how would it have affected their learning throughout the rest of their life? For those who don’t know what grit is, according to afineparent.com, “Grit is a distinct combination of passion, resilience, determination, and focus that allows a person…

Questions arise all the time about how some kids do better at standardized testing, homework assignments, or even classwork than other students. Some people think that the answer lies in a textbook buried in the deepest and darkest corners of the world, or a school library, however, this idea would be wrong. The answer lies in a psychological thought process that allows people to see that the answer is in the student’s motivation itself. Although many try to use positive reinforcement or negative reinforcement to train students to study or learn a piece of information, the drive has to come from the student’s own intrinsic motivational drives. In other words, the student has to want to do it instead of being made to do it.…

Before I began my Freshman Development Seminar course with Professor Furet, I believed that this class would not be of good use to me. The reason for this was because of my beliefs in self-teaching myself to learn the basics with additional help from other sources. However, it did not turn out the way I wanted it to be. Therefore, I had to pay to get taught what I could have done on my own, at least that is what I convinced myself then and there. Throughout my class sessions with Ms. Furet, I learned more than I could have ever imagined.…
