It began in 1972 when WGBH produced one of the nation’s best loved children’s television shows called ZOOM. The aim was children between the ages of 7 and 12 and its claim to fame was that it was a show created by children for children. Viewers could send in ideas for shows and local children served as the cast. WGBH went on to produce many other children’s programs such as Design Squad and Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego but it is their animated shows that really interest me. Between the Lions was a favorite and I grew up watching Arthur. Using the powerful medium of animation, the Arthur books are brought to life and the show teaches many life lessons. It is now the longest running animated children’s television series in history. I was lucky enough to intern on FETCH! With Ruff Rufferman. It was fascinating to see how WGBH creates these shows and the amount of staff and time it takes for each episode. The goal throughout is education through entertainment.
WGBH’s growth over the years encompassed twelve buildings in the Cambridge and Allston neighborhoods. When Harvard University ended a long time lease with the company, the decision was made to consolidate and build a new facility in a section of Brighton which was being revitalized after New Balance choose it for its new headquarters.
