In the article of Paper Tigers, Wesley Yang discusses how he believes that there is a lot of racial stereotypes used in today's society, in this particular article there are racially inflicted assumptions towards Asian Americans that people perceive towards Asian Americans simply because of the way Asian Americans look. For instance, Wesley Yang discusses how even though, “Asians graduate from college at a rate higher than any other ethnic group in America, including whites. They earn a higher median family income than any other ethnic group in America, including whites.” (Yang) Asians are hardly never given the opportunity to be a given a leadership role in the workplace, even though they work the …show more content…
Yang does not perceive himself the way others may perceive him as far as, how good he is at math or a person who is striving for the greatest achievement of their life. He does not care about the Ivy League system or being a person who knows it all. There are a lot of racially inflected assumptions that people may assume, simply because of the way there face looks. This stereotypical view of someone based upon looks plays a major role in our society and how it affects us people in the world we live in today. I was curious to find out more about race after reading this article, which led me to do some research on race. In fact, the most liked tweet of Twitter's history was Obama's after the Charlottesville violence in August of 2017. “No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin or his background or his religion … People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love … For love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.” (Obama) The fight towards ending race needs a lot of progress, in order for us to end the way people view others no matter what color skin or descent you are. People think that the protests that are going on in the National Football League assume it’s for the anthem or the military, when in reality it’s about race, and all of the struggles that come with being a minority in America. Colin Kaepernick who was once an NFL quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers before being let go for accumulating much of the publicity that started these protests stated something that made national attention. “I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color.” (Kaepernick) All 32 NFL teams on Sunday either stood together, kneeled together, or locked arms with each other, when it came time for the pledge of allegiance. From players to staff and even NFL owners, they stood together showing a sign of unity. I've been watching the national football league for over 15 years and I've never seen a better show of unity during our national anthem. Our very own Dale Hansen who is a sportscaster for the Dallas affiliate WFAA, issued a strong statement about the protests. “The young black athletes are not disrespecting America or the military by taking a knee during the anthem. They are respecting the best thing about America. It’s a dog whistle to the racists among us to say otherwise. They, and all of us, should protest how black Americans are treated in this country.” (Hansen) It was nice to see the professional athletes
