9/11 Making heroes and America Stronger Acts of terrorism occur all over the world with the goal to create fear in the people being attacked. One of the worst acts of terrorism known in history occurred on American soil. September 11th, 2001 four airplanes were hijacked; with two being crashed into the twin towers, one hitting the pentagon, and the final plane crashing in a field in Pennsylvania. This attack was unlike anything the new world has seen before. The attackers wanted Americans to be scared but that was not the case. Franklin that was first published in The Bergen Record, (September 12th, 2001), the viewer is able to see the American flag being raised in front of the Twin Towers by three New York City firemen, showing that America is still strong and together. “The firefighters found a flagpole within rubble about 20 feet off the ground on West Street. They used an improvised ramp to climb to the pole to raise the flag” (Morgan). After this horrific attack on American soil many believed that America would fall into a state of fear but the exact opposite occurred. George W. Bush stated “Terrorist attacks can shake the foundation of our biggest buildings, but they cannot touch the foundation of America. These acts shatter steel, but they cannot dent the steel of American resolve,” (468). With the picture being released a day after George W. Bush’s speech it enhanced the idea that America was not shattered and it showed that Americans were strong and they were still united. With American’s seeing the media release of the photo and watching George W. Bush’s speech on television it was known by many that the terrorist goals were not succeeded although they killed thousands of Americans. With this being said, these attacks only made America stronger than ever. The enrollment rate of American military increased and surpass the normal expectations the military had prior to the 9/11 attack. Bush’s speech. It allowed Americans to see that America was still strong and was not going to be afraid of the terrorist. It also allowed American citizens know that not only were the first responders heroes but many Americans were as well. The firefighters in the picture were just a figure of heroism to the American community but with aid of Bush’s speech it was known that many Americans were helping the cause. “The Record itself received 30,000 requests to reprint the photograph, which the paper initially granted if they were not for profit” (Morgan). This photo helped remind Americans of the heroism in the country and the strength and unity in the best nation in the world. With it being 2015 now and recent events that have occurred in the world specifically Paris, France, terrorism is still a huge issue for the world as a whole. With threats being made daily whether directed at America or anywhere else in the world it is important for Americans to remember to stay united and strong and not fear the terrorist because that is what they want from
