One of the major themes in the novel that personally stood out to me was that your environment determines who you are. This is shown throughout the novel by the characters actions. At the beginning of the novel the boys arrived at the island very proper and formal from the U.K. The part of the story that shows this was on page.18, “The creature was a party of boys, marching approximately in step in two parallel lines and dressed in strangely eccentric clothing.” This line helps us visualize that the boys were very orderly, especially where it says they were walking in two parallel lines. Now we can fast forward into the book to where they have been on the island for a few …show more content…
The reason I believe that this happened was because of the challenges the boys had to face. For example one of the biggest problems was that there was no adults on the island. This drastically affects the way the boys functioned. Especially because they didn’t have that adult figure to guide them in the right path. So they had to fend for themselves which caused them to do whatever they thought necessary for that occasion. This caused many issues not only to the boys themselves but to others around them and even the island. For instance when the boys ended up letting the fire get out of control causing part of the island to be set on fire, killing an innocent little boy. The extensive use of symbolism is to help the reader to further think about the deeper meaning of the novel. It makes the reader stop and talk about what just happened instead of just being told what happens.
The Conch: The conch symbolizes Ralph’s leadership and the order of the island. It represents all the rules and the boys ties to society. It also is connected to Piggy because he was the one to encounter the conch. Then when the conch was shattered, Piggy’s head was crushed …show more content…
The story itself though does not present me with a realistic vision of human nature. It is kinda far fetched and does persuade me to believe that this is society. I believe that society could possible become this though but it would take a lot of people to not do the right thing and become in a sense “evil.” Something that I have observed that would contradict Golding is the police departments and other law enforcement places. These people work hard to make sure that we live by the rules for everyone's happiness. So I believe that Golding’s ideas would not
