Fire also shows that civilization is good because its intention is to call society to them in order to rescue them from savagery on the island. When the boys make the fire that keeps going down and not making smoke, “Life became a race with the fire… [and] even the smallest boys… [bring] little pieces of wood” in order to help pitch in (Golding 41). The boys believe that the fire is the only way that they will stay alive, so keeping the fire burning brightly will keep everyone hopeful of returning home. The fire also brings them together because everyone is focused on keeping the signal fire going in order to get back to civilization, from the oldest to the littluns, and going home means success.
