What Does Music Mean To Me

Music means something different for everyone, but for me, it means life. As my classmates and I entered high school, we all found a niche-- a group of people like us who made us feel like we belonged, and for me that group was band. Joining band my freshman year, especially marching band provided me with a group of friends and a comfortable place to be myself. I never went through the awkward first day of school looking for someone to sit by because I entered high school with more than forty familiar faces and mentors. Marching band camp had provided me with upperclassmen to look up to, and I still remember and try to follow them in my leadership position in band. Music has been my source of comfort and friends throughout high school, as I have never gone through a full day of school without visiting the band room at least once. I had the opportunity to play saxophone my eighth grade year and won the first chair on my first chair challenge, and I have been first chair since then. For me, playing music is not about the chair position. Having been extremely shy, I never expected myself to be comfortable with auditioning in front of anyone, being a section leader, taking a solo, or being an example for underclassmen. Despite my previous struggle with timidness, I had the honor of becoming the marching band saxophone section leader my junior and senior year. During my senior year marching season, Colton’s dad, a sophomore in my saxophone section approached me and personally thanked me for giving Colton an example and high bar to reach.
