What Does The Weather Symbolize In The Great Gatsby

There are hidden meanings everywhere in life, including books. Symbolism is a popular type of writing, letting the reader attempt to uncover the author's secret meanings. The author has to let out some of his secrets in order for the reader to get the inside scoop. If the reader fails to pick up on the symbolism he or she misses an important side of the book. In the book The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald symbolism is used to foreshadow and warn characters about the future. Right when we met the character Gatsby we learned that he was in for some trouble. “No-- Gatsby turned out alright at the end; it is what preyed on Gatsby, what foul dust floated in the wake of his dreams.” (P.2) Gatsby was a tremendous character but he had one issue. This is where Daisy killed Myrtle Wilson. “This is the valley of ashes- a fantastic farm where ashes grow like wheat into ridges and hills and grotesque gardens; where ashes take the forms of houses and chimneys and rising smoke, and finally, with a transcendent effort, of men who move dimly and already crumbling through the powdery air. But above the gray land and the spasms of bleak dust which drift endlessly over it, you perceive, after a moment, the eyes of Doctor T. J. Eckleburg.” (P.23) The valley of ashes represents a dark and gloomy area. Foreshadowing a dark event. The novel describes the men who work here to be covered in its ash, Gatsby ends up covered in its ash too. Daisy hits Myrtle Wilson and Gatsby takes the fall for it, thus covering him in his lies to protect his love and dreams of Daisy. The eyes of T. J. Eckleburg represent god and how god sees everything. Even tho Daisy was the one driving Gatsby gets killed, this is because of Gatsby’s past and how he made his money illegally.
