People say an American is someone who is a citizen or resident of The United States. While others think that is not the correct answer to this question. They might think the answer is a person who has accepted their new beginnings. Generally speaking, there are an infinite amount of answers to this commonly asked question. For example, if a person wants to take a career but doesn’t have enough money to pay for it, they might have to take some very big and dangerous risks. These dangerous risks may then lead you to successfully finishing your career. If it weren’t for the risks you took you wouldn’t have completed your career. In the article of “What is an American?” in paragraph 6 it states “Immigrants have no assurance of success in a new land with different habits, institutions and language. They leave friends, relatives and familiar places, often risking their lives to cross oceans and hostile country to reach their new homes. But they, like all Americans, understand that the timid achieve nothing and forgo even that which sustains us through the worst of times: hope.” If it weren’t for these risks people take then immigrants would have never left their homes to come here and start a new life. An American is also someone who leaves their past behind in their home country to come to the U.S and focuses on their new one. To put it in another way, say you are a mother of a son in your home country and your family does not have enough money for him to go to school. Your son then decides he should go to The United States to get a job and have money so he can pay for his classes. This is an example of someone who leaves their past behind in their home country to come to the U.S and focus on their new one. In the article named “What is an American?” it states “People seek economic prosperity, leaving behind the resentment in other countries that is aimed at those who better their material condition. Throughout the world and throughout history, millions of individuals have endured poverty with dignity. But there is no inherent dignity in poverty. Individuals came to America to farm their own farms and run their own enterprises.” This shows how people leave their countries to come to
