The concepts of genre, audience, and rhetorical situation are alike in their significance to the process of writing. They can be distinguished not only by their definitive meanings, but by a series of questions considered in the early stages of writing; what do I want to say, how do I want to say it, and who do I want to say it to? To these questions there are no clear-cut answers, empowering the writer to explore a variety of topics. It is important to understand that genre, audience, and rhetorical situation are not considered in a sequential order, nor are they exclusive to planning. In fact, the development of new ideas can occur in any stage of writing.…
I have chosen this topic for my investigation as I find mythical (fictional) movies to be fascinating and am especially interested in the link between the famous movie, “The Wizard of Oz” and the prequel, “Oz the Great and Powerful”, notionally set 20 years before the events of the original film. Made in 2013, the prequel focuses on the character Theodora, who is presented initially as a good witch but who becomes the Wicked Witch of the West in the later film. I decided to study how the scriptwriters use her language to reinforce and exert power over the other characters. There are many techniques the scriptwriters use to portray Theodora in the film, for example through the use of imperatives and interrogatives which makes the audience realise the power shifts between the characters. I anticipate that in the film Oz the Great and Powerful she will use imperatives and Interrogatives towards the character of Oz, as he is a new character of whom she has little knowledge.…
Television and popular media disseminate the idea of gender roles to audiences who consume these forms of medias, including telenovelas. Telenovelas are limited run serial dramas that are produced all over the world, yet are quite popular in Latin American countries. These dramas focus on different themes which include love, adulthood, death, comedy and music. The way that these themes are addressed depends on the type of telenovela that is being created and produced for different audiences. These telenovelas have the power of influencing societal beliefs on different ideas, whether it be love, or what the proper gender roles are for men and women.…
Burnt-out theatre - The burnt out theatre repented the environment of the mentally ill patients and the lifestyle they are subjected to. As they are socially outcasted by the community in Melbourne, the patients are living beyond the same four walls, in which bores them where as entering a new routine excites the patients and enthuses them to get involved with the production. Arabian Phoenix -The women in the original version of Così Fan Tutte and the spin off version Cosi incorporate the mythical Arabian phoenix which is a representation of a female. As its beauty enhances and captures men with its voice.…
The translation between mediums for artistic and literary works is a difficult transition to make. The formats have different properties and limitations. The transition from a live medium to a medium with permanence is especially difficult in that the work loses the interaction between work and audience. In the YouTube adaptation of David Henry Hwang’s play Yellow Face, the use of the site’s annotations feature changes the theater experience with a different kind of interactivity, uniqueness, and visual composition only possible because of the new medium.…
Transition and character prove to be crucial elements used by playwrights Jane Harrison and Lally Katz in their powerful contemporary Australian plays. The playwrights manipulate these elements to create powerful, moving scenes in both Neighbourhood Watch and Stolen that tackle issues including the ‘Australian’ identity and isolation. By similarly incorporating elements, styles and acting techniques intended by both playwrights, my group was able to create a fully theatrically realised piece that communicated Australian issues powerfully. Alike to Neighbourhood Watch, Stolen explores identity in a way that educated white Australians on the severity of the issue.…
When Shirley reads aloud, her interlanguage causes her to misplace the word and sentence stress. Even though this may affect how well she is understood by others when she reads, her level of understanding when she reads is good at this level. This term, Shirley was asked to analyse the novella, ‘Of Mice and Men.’ From her responses in quizzes, homework assignment and writing activities based on the book; it is evident that her ability to tackle unknown words and phrases are developing well. Shirley has learnt some metalanguage/ techniques to examine literary devices used in poetry and narratives.…
What the characters say is heavily relied on to convey meaning in Zeffirelli’s version, just like Shakespeare ’s play. What the characters say is straightforward and expected to be understood by the audience. In both versions, Shakespeare’s script is followed almost word for word and characters talk as though they are in the era of Romeo and Juliet. However, to suit the modern audience, Baz Luhrmann heavily relies on symbolic codes, character exaggeration and cleaver filmic techniques to convey meaning.…
Yuwei Pan 12/10/2016 From Cage to Glass and beyond Second paper Between the Female Voice and the Machine: Laurie Anderson We recognize and judge people largely according to their voices, whether they are intelligent or dull, sane or insane, female or male, good or evil, friend or enemy. Anne Carson writes that Aristotle found “the highpitched voice of the female is one evidence of her evil disposition, for creatures who are brave or just (like lions, bulls, roosters and the human male) have large deep voices.” The judgments can happen brutally quickly, and thus language and voices are devices traditionally used in theater to create believable characters. The voice itself is a form of language because it delivers to listeners something about the speaker.…
Contemporary Australian Theatre playwrights use their plays as a way of exploring the social concerns within society using various techniques and conventions. These dramatic techniques and conventions used alongside the elements of drama help to convey ideas that not only entertain but also engage the audience by evoking their emotions as they find themselves dragged into the characters worlds. The two contemporary Australian plays we had studied in class ‘Fearless’ by Mirra Todd and ‘Neighbourhood Watch’ by Lally Katz, provided us with examples of how the directional choices within this theatre style can create an engaging experience for Australian audiences, but universal audiences. By exploring social concerns in these plays such as mental…
Readers might find J.G Ballard’s short story ironic. Told through literature, J.G Ballard describes a world completely consumed with a screen/film, so much that physical human contact no longer existed. Ballard uses The Intensive Care unit to reveal the relationship between film and literature.. The narrator of The Intensive Care Unit states “it seems only fitting that a complete record of this event should be made” (Ballard, 195). The narrator believes the camera possess the capability to portray the event occurring between the narrator and his family to an audience in the way he sees it.…
Baz Luhrmann’s film Romeo and Juliet is an appropriation of Romeo and Juliet. Both share similar ideas yet also reflect their different time and audiences. In light of this statement, choose at least one key scene in the story and compare and contrast the two scenes. Baz Luhrmann’s “William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet” is a modern compliment to an old vision. In order to appreciate Baz Luhrmann’s appropriation of “Romeo and Juliet” we must first address the differing audiences to whom Shakespeare & Luhrmann were pitching their productions.…
The Sweet Girl Graduate by Sarah Curzon focuses on this specific representation of gender where the heroine of the play is attempting to comply to societal norms by cross-dressing in order to receive a higher education. The heroine is obliging to the gender hierarchy that exists, and as a result, this portrays the heroine as someone who is attempting to break away from male dominance, while at the same time accepting it as women were expected to. The representation of gender roles in The Sweet Girl Graduate creates a contradictory perception of what women are meant to achieve in the play, and this is due to the portrayal of the heroine as a free individual; however, at the same time she is subjected to follow the status quo forced…
On September 27, 2016, two women from Better Said Than Done, Jessica Robinson and Mary Foxworth, hosted an Oral Storytelling Workshop during the Fall for The Book Festival. Their purpose was to help their audience “hone [their] own storytelling techniques and build… confidence [in] presenting [their] own tale in front of a crowd”. Although the workshop failed to meet the goals stated in the Fall for Books summary, it was still a successful performance because Foxworth and Robinson used the feedback loop to continuously monitor the audience’s response level in order to teach and engage the audience. Setting and Context…
Othello - Playful Film or Boring Play? William Shakespeare wrote the popular tragedy ‘Othello’ which has been adapted in multiple ways. One particular popular way is live action films. This essay will be discussing the similarities and the differences between Shakespeare’s literary story and Oliver Parker’s 1995 film starring Lawrence Fishburn. The key factors are obviously the same between both versions, the plotand the characters.…
