The oceanic ecosystem gives the human race food and overpopulation and underpopulation can ruin that. Then the oceanic ecosystem might affect the overland ecosystem. Some may say, “but what to sharks contribute to our world? What do they do that is so important that we shouldn’t be able to kill them?” and the answer actually is very important.…
There are some upsides to overfishing/ the pros of overfishing. In “6 Pros and Cons of Overfishing” by ‘Flow Psychology’ they have these pros that I will mention. It has created more job opportunities because “Since the aquaculture industry boom, numerous jobs have been made available to the people.” Provides new skills sets and “…training will be needed.…
Shark fishing has become even more popular. However the decline in the populations has brought some concern, from the over fishing. With so many people going out and fishing for sharks, there doesn’t seem to be a way for sharks to recover their numbers in time with the rise of fishing. Population numbers were at alarming low, but as of recent years, the population has slowly been recovering, especially off of the east coast. The NOAA( National Oceanic And Atmoshereic Administration) had this to say on the matter recently, "We've seen an increase in the number of sharks in every survey since 2001; that reflects management efforts to conserve the populations of various shark species.”…
Charles Clover addresses the serious issue of overfishing and the impacting is having around various oceans around the world. Clover argues that the current fishing practices and illegal fishing along with the use of high tech equipments, are reducing fish stocks significantly, for larger quantities of fish are being taken out of the ocean at a rate that is impossible for fish stocks to recover in number and survive. He analyzes the situation showing how the fish crisis is affecting today and will eventually worsen in the near future, having fatal social, ecological and economic repercussions. In terms of the social aspects, the outcome of declining fish in oceans is devastating for communities and individuals that are dependent on sea produce.…
Fishing lines, lobster traps, crab pots, hooks and lures can get dropped in the ocean and it can cause marine animals to ingest them, get entangled and die. Those items can also cause health issues for any living creature who uses the water. Unregulated and unreported commercial fishing is the reason for the fall of fish stocks. Fishing is bad for the environment, and so is the camping occurring next to it, especially the…
The effects of the dying cod population in New England In the Northeastern United States the population of cod is decreasing, and causing fishermen to adapt to different species of seafood or end their fishing career. Since the turn of the century the amount of cod in the waters between Nova Scotia and Massachusetts has decreased by over 75% (Horowitz,2015). This decrease has been blamed on the strong fishing community in the Northeast, overfishing being the main reason. Due to this, several experts believe that cod fishing will be nothing more than a past time in the coming years (Russell,2013).…
Solutions for overfishing could be stricter rules and people to enforce them, more frequently. A very negative way humans have affected the lake is the pollution, in and around the lake.…
The catch to overfishing is that it is not only detrimental to our marine ecosystem, but also harmful to the very fishing industries that cause this myriad of issues. The problem is that this issue began with the overfishing of whales for blubber in the early 1800s, before the repercussions of such activity was readily foreseeable. The issue eventually escalated in a spiral of overfishing of multiple other species with the introduction and improvement of fishing methods in various forms; most predominantly targeted were herring, cod, and sardine. However, as there were certainly multiple incentives for overfishing at the time, there are even more incentives for overfishing today. These include the desire to earn money, the urge for more mass…
In Marta Coll’s article “Ecosystem Overfishing in the Ocean”, she explains the global effects of deep-ocean overfishing. Coll describes how overfishing destroys fish populations, damages ocean ecosystems, and causes economic instability (2008, p. 1). Overfishing is the unsustainable harvest of fish for market. Fisheries are overfished to create more profits in the short term for fishermen, who collect a large percentage of a fish population to sell. The removal of the fish from the ecosystem destroys the entire food web, down to the trophic level (Coll, 2008, p.2).…
The Cod is the world's most famous edible fish. It is the chef's favorite cooking ingredients and the delicious for the mouth of diners. Its low calories and high nutrition almost could please everybody. However, what we do not know is that, for centuries, its destiny was firmly related to human beings and was regarded as the witness of human civilization process in the modern era.…
When buying fish at the store or eating at a seafood restaurant most people don’t give much thought to where the food they’re eating came from beyond “the ocean.” Even less consideration is put into how the fish was caught or if the practice is sustainable. Today’s mentality is all about instant gratification regardless of future consequences, whether it be health or environmental risk. Many people may think the Ocean is an inexhaustible source of food because it covers over 70% of the Earths surface and is as deep as many of the largest mountains are tall. This assumption is incorrect and in part feeds into the reason why over-fishing occurs.…
As fishermen are doing their jobs, the shark population is dropping catastrophically. The environmental engineer and writer of Scientific and Educational Publications talked about the shark numbers in the ocean and that the “populations of dusky, oceanic whitetip, and silky sharks in the Gulf of Mexico have declined by 79% to 97% since the 1950s due to overfishing. Massive declines are also reported over the same time period for blue, mako, oceanic whitetip, silky, and thresher sharks in the tropical Pacific Ocean” (“Threats to Aquatic Environments”). As the fishermen continue their job the percentages a dropping more. The lowering percentage is not only directed to one shark species.…
The ocean is home to more than 400 different shark species. These predators are portrayed by humans as mighty and extremely dangerous. While it may be well-known that these animals are the top of the food chain and have no sea predator, it’s a shock when they find out that they are on the brink of becoming endangered. Humans outside of the fishing industries fail to understand that we have a dramatic influence on the ocean. On the Pacific Ocean only, the numbers of tuna fishing vessels reach into the thousands.…
The Egyptians and Chinese did it thousands of years ago. Since then the human population has increased enormously and as a consequence so has the human demand for more food, particularly protein. In the last couple hundred years, humans have mastered the ability to sail long distances across the sea and bring back to markets large quantities of fish. The result is that wild fish populations are declining dramatically. Large areas of the oceans have been overfished and fish populations have collapsed.…
There are several reasons why people engage in the act of illegal fishing asides from the obvious high profit that would be gained and they are: • Too many fishermen chasing too few fish: Currently the fishing industry has too much capital invested in vessels that it must operate to realize a return. There are too many boats at sea trying to make catch on a daily basis and this is causing the aquatic animals to reproduce poorly and vessels are not waiting for them to reproduce rather they catch whatever is in their way just to realize profit for the operators and owners and this thereafter leads them to illegal fishing. • High and growing demand for seafood: As the world population continues to soar, the demand for seafood, an attainable protein resource, increases and fisheries stocks are harvested beyond their ability to sustainably reproduce. The act of fishing was previously regarded as trash but now due to the demand experienced everyone is turning to it for a livelihood and those that are impatient go to other States water to fish thereby committing the offence of illegal fishing because many a times the actual number of catch is not reported or less is…
