What Is Savagery In Lord Of The Flies

In William Golding’s novel, Lord of the Flies, a group of English boys became stranded on an unknown island. Their plane was shot down during the battles of World War II. They crash landed on the island. The pilot died, but fortunately the passengers survived. The group of boys, left to their own devices, had to sustain on the island before rescue can come. Initially the boys wanted to create their own civilization, and recreate what they were used too. They elected a leader, established rules, and assigned tasks to one another. However, these rules were not enforced, the leader, Ralph, did not have a strong authority over the children, and the children were not committed to the jobs they were responsible for. The only way the boys arrived on the island was because their plane were shot down, during a world war. World War II was a global conflict between nations across the world. People were destroying each other on a larger scale with deadly weapons. These people, that fought in war, expressed savagery and destructive behaviors even in civilization. Also if it weren't for war, there wouldn't have been a naval officer to find and rescue the boys. This is an example of how human nature makes people destructive. William Golding's novel, Lord of the Flies, may have been about a group of young boys being stranded on an island and later getting rescued. However, looking into some of the events that happened on the island suggests that there may be a deeper meaning behind the plot. The way the boys acted and the reasons why characters are where, seems to make the plot revolve around the theme of human nature. The events mentioned earlier suggests that William Golding is trying to suggest that human nature makes a person savage and
