The short story, “Seventh Grade” is a first person narrative of a boy on his first day of seventh grade, who initially believes he will hate it, but later realizes he will like seventh grade. The theme of the story is to be open to new experiences, and don’t be so sure of something until you really know it. The author utilizes several literary elements, including personification, hyperboles, flashbacks, metaphors and similes. The author’s word choice, or, diction, greatly influences the mood of the story, gleeful, as the words are typically easily understood, and create an inviting atmosphere.
