What Does it Mean to be an American? How does one define an American? To each person an American can mean different things. It is possible to give an overall description of what they are, instead of a crisp definition. To be an American is to be united, to be determined, and to be welcoming. To be an American is to be united. Every individual together makes up America. Being a part of that unity is to be an American. “I hear America singing the varied carols, I hear,” Walt Wittman said in his poem “I Hear America Singing” (line #). Each american is singing his own song, but together they create one song. Like our pledge states, “One nation, under God.”
To be an American also means to be determined. Without determination not a thing in this
