A Day to Remember

“Our enemies have made a mistake that America’s enemies always make. They saw liberty and thought they saw weakness.” (George W. Bush) Although, 9/11 happened when I was in kindergarten, it has been a part of my life ever since. It blows my mind that today’s high school freshman are being taught 9/11 as a historical event and not one that they were alive for. 9/11 is intertwined in my life in many ways but the largest interaction I have had is Thomas Burnett Day. The song that still strikes a chord with me is Bells of Freedom. Mr. Storlee showed a slideshow of photos from 9/11 and played that song in the background. The song Bells of Freedom by Bon Jovi is believed to be written in reaction to 9/11 and how we stand tall as a nation. The song begins with someone standing alone in the streets, you can sense the immense sadness in the beginning of the song. The person falls to his knees and feels defeat. This part of the song I believe is trying to portray the pain felt on 9/11. Then the chorus begins with a sound of rejoice. Ringing the bells of freedom. I believe this part of the song is to show that we still stand as a nation together and free. Throughout the rest of the song it talks about rebuilding and the sun still shining even throughout the darkness. I still cannot listen to the song without tearing up. That song will forever be a reminder for me of that day in Kindergarten. Despite the fact that 9/11 was one of the worst days for us as a country some of the most beautiful artwork has come from it. Whether it be the photos, artwork or memorials 9/11 inspired people to
