It began with the council of trent which changed the qualifications required for people to become clergy members. This meant that the readers of the bibles had to actually be able to read latin instead of mumble random words that make no sense and that not just anybody could become a clergy member. The counter-reformation also focused on removing pluralism in order to stop high up bishops and priests from abusing their position and becoming pluralists. This lead to a changed social hierarchy. Another thing that the Catholics did was remove indulgences. Indulgences which were the original cause of the protestant reformation were removed due to the fact that it did not correspond with the idea that good works and faith got you into heaven instead of just buying your way there with money. During the Catholic reformation, orders were created. They were created not by the clergy, but rather by ordinary people. One such order is the jesuits which was made of people who often were of military backgrounds, but later turned to Catholicism.
