The reason Anse said that because he feels like the new road that is by his house is cursed and brought bad luck. He blames the new road that is alongside the house for all his problems. He said that ever since that road was built by his house nothing but bad luck has been coming to him.He fails to ever take responsibility for anything that goes wrong. It just shows how Anse would never take the blame, that anything bad happened is not his fault.
All his neighbors feels like that reason why Addie is sick is because of Anse. They felt like the Burden family was suffering Addie. That she was tired of doing and putting up everything from them. People would describes how Anse overworked her and that she wanted to die to get away from them. Anse
