Who Is Gilgamesh A Hero

Improved Essays
Gilgamesh is not a hero in The Epic of Gilgamesh. The traditional hero helps save people and mankind, in some cases, but they also are willing to die for the good of others which Gilgamesh does not seem willing to do. Through his journey he is searching for immortality. During the class Epic Tradition it is taught that epic heroes would rather die in a battle and be remembered as that, than to die of old age. He does not perform brave deeds or face enormous obstacles in this book. Gilgamesh does not produce characteristics of a hero.
Gilgamesh is overall a very selfish guy. The whole reason for his journey is so that he looks like a hero to his people. He believes he has “not established [his] name stamped on bricks as [his] destiny decreed”

In each literary and folk epic there are characters called epic heroes, epic heroes can be seen as superhuman because of their outstanding achievements but what makes the plot is that they are on a larger than life quest. Along the way there is major conflict, like fear, battles and bloodshed. Achilles from The Iliad written by Homer, Beowulf from Beowulf translated by Burton Raffel and Gilgamesh from Gilgamesh retold by Herbert Manson all are epic heroes and in some ways very similar like their bravery and god-like strength but in other ways they are different. In order to be an epic hero the characters must be brave just as Beowulf was, just to prove how brave he was told his men to “leave your battle shields and your spears” (Beowulf line 130) as they approached the…

I believe that Gilgamesh is not a hero, but is in fact an anti-hero. Gilgamesh definitely does not fit my description of a hero for a number of reasons. First, Gilgamesh begins the story as a selfish tyrant who gets exactly what he wants from his people as they cower in fear. Later on in the story, Gilgamesh finds a friend and becomes a little happier, yet still feels the need to make his god-like reputation known to the world.…
