Failed romance can be tragic, yet sometimes it can lead to a bigger tragedy when there are many people involved. In “A Rose for Emily” by William Faulkner, Miss Emily, Miss Emily’s father, and the townspeople are ultimately responsible for the death of Homer Barron. First, Miss Emily, the murderer, is responsible for the death of Homer Barron. Although Miss Emily’s father did not kill Homer Barron by himself, he shares a great responsible for the death of Homer Barron. Finally, the townspeople also share a responsibility for the death of Homer Baron, since they drive Miss Emily into becoming a murderer. In the story, Miss Emily bought the poison from the pharmacist and did not tell the reason why she need the poison to the pharmacist (Faulkner). Then, the author writes, “…Miss Emily had been to the jeweler’s and ordered a man’s toilet set in silver, with the letters H. B. on each piece…she had bought a complete outfit of men’s clothing” (Faulkner). Then, shortly after she bought the man’s grooming kit and men’s shirt, the town has never seen Homer Barron ever again (Faulkner). After Miss Emily has died, the town found out Miss Emily’s secret that she has kept the corpse of Homer Barron in the second floor of her house (Faulkner). The poison was brought to kill Homer Barron and the “man’s toilet set” and “men’s clothing” is a symbol the Homer Barron and Miss Emily will be living together. The connection of the poison, the “man’s toilet set,” and “men’s clothing” that Miss Emily bought before the disappearance of Homer Barron and the corpse of Homer Barron inside of her house proves that Miss Emily killed Homer Barron. The author writes, “We had long thought of them as a tableau, Miss Emily a slender figure in white in the background, her father a spraddled silhouette in the foreground, his back to her and clutching a horsewhip, the two of them framed by the back-flung front door” (Faulkner). The color “white” implies virginity of Miss Emily. Miss Emily’s father standing foreground with Miss Emily stuck in the house implies that he is standing against her and the world, protecting her from the outsiders. Miss Emily’s father is “clutching a horsewhip” means that he has total control on her. Miss Emily’s father keep Miss Emily from the rest of the world. He is too controlling, overprotective, and will not let Miss Emily live her own life. He rules her life and prevent her from living another way of life. In the end, he does not let her date or marry anyone, and cuts off any hope of her having a future with a husband. With his controlling parenting style, Miss Emily did not grow up properly. She always under her dad’s protection. As a result, she cannot fit in with the town and keen to have the life of her own. Miss Emily missed the opportunity to marry a good man because her father did not let her, so she became single.
