Community is important online for several reasons. First it builds relationships between classmates. Also, it assist students in finding ways to reach out to their classmates for ideas, feedback, and resources. The result of community for online learning gives students who study common information can reach out to one another for feedback, assistance, collaboration, support and comradery in their learning. Synchronous vs. Asynchronous: Please discuss the advantages and disadvantages of both live chat (synchronous) and asynchronous (threaded) online discussions.
Most obvious as mentioned by authors (insert name) the asynchronous discussion allow for students across many time zones to discuss topics and learning (date). Additionally, I would argue it allows students time to reflect and assess what they are posting in the discussion. For example, prior to a post I tend to re-read and edit posts to be sure they communicate and represent what I want to convey. The disadvantage is that classmates form opinions or impressions of each other based on the written word, which is not always a true reflection of an individual. First, this is a quick and efficient approach for individuals to communicate since there is the advantage of real time meeting. However, the difficulty if students have other commitments outside of the online learning environment, as many of us experience and mentioned by (author name, date) timing for everyone can be difficult to coordinate for everyone to simultaneously meet. That is unless the instructor takes this into consideration when developing the course and schedules the meeting for set time/date within course syllabus.
