Why Is Plagiarism Important

According to an Online Dictionary, to plagiarize means to “steal and pass off as one's own” or “to use without crediting the source”. An example of plagiarism are turning in someone else's work as your own and also copying words or ideas from someone else without giving credit. Furthermore, using other resources such as videos, music and images without permission or credit is also classed as plagiarism.
I think it is important to not plagiarize because it makes students work very repetitive and our society cannot move on at all. When we write essays in our words, I think it shows a great deal of understanding of the topic/subject that we writing about and makes learning more enjoyable. On www.plagiarism.org, I have found out the consequences of plagiarism. One of the consequences of plagiarism is that your research or your final paper may be resulting in “failure for the assignment, failure of the course and sometimes expulsion.” Another consequence is that it could be taken up legally and the student could be “punishable by fines and one - ten years in jail.” This shows that plagiarism is very serious and it has drastic consequences for the student and it is very important not to plagiarize.
Another important part in research is referencing properly. According to open.ac.uk, they state that in order to text reference, you need to put quotes if you are directly linking the quote from e.g. an article or a book; you need to include the page number and the year within brackets.
