“Juvenile Essay”
Numerous people assume different when it comes to dealing with teenagers once they commit a crime. They are not born to just commit a crime and be sentenced to life in prison forever. Sometimes, they do unusual crimes because their brains have not fully developed yet. Furthermore, the crimes that youths committed were not an accident, nor intended, though they know what is right or wrong, it is considered that their brain is still developing. Some youths had been influenced on going through the wrong paths without even noticing it. The Supreme Court had been debating whether the juveniles who committed murder should be or should not be sentenced to life in prison because it is violating the eighth amendment’s ban on cruel and unusual punishment. The 8th amendment is saying excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted. According to the article Startling Finds on Teenage Brains, “The loss [ of brain tissues] was like a wildfire, and you could see it in every teenager. Gray matter, which brain researchers believe supports all our thinking and emotions, is purged at a rate of 1 to 2 percent a year during this period”(Thompson 7). The author is saying that teenager’s brains are not fully matured and that their decision making are still not as effective and most of the time not the best. Moreover, since the brain is not fully developed it is unjust to sentence them to prison without giving them a chance. Thus, it is impossible to know who are the good children so it is important to modify who will actually change and be a better
