Why We Have College

With that being said, let’s jump right into the mix of things and talk about one of the main reasons why I believe going to college serves as an advantageous opportunity. College helps us prepare for any envisioned careers we seek. We need the preparation to be success in any line of work. In an article I found “Live and Learn: Why We Have College” by author Louis Menand. He gives his audience three different theories to choose from on why we “have college”. Theory 1, was that college sorts the “smart” from the “others”. Theory 2, is that college culturizes us. And theory 3, college trains us for specialized work and I found myself agreeing with his third theory 100%. Menand says, “The theory that fits their situation—Theory 3—is that advanced economies demand specialized knowledge and skills, and, since high school is aimed at the general learner, college is where people can be taught what they need in order to enter a vocation.” (Menand 7). I couldn’t have come to a better agreement with that statement. Companies, bosses, business owners whomever it may be demand such things from there personnel because they want a successful business. We can’t have untrained or unexperienced people under occupations that requires some sort of specialized training because more than likely they won’t have a clue to what it is they’re doing. I can’t just apply for a job at the hospital and right off the bat start taking care of patient with a possibly serious illness. That requires years of training to build on that knowledge of expertise. Going to college and getting the specialized training we need to get employed almost multiplies the chances of us getting a good job that pays good money because we know what we’re

Menand begins with a personal anecdote, about a student asking why he was required to buy a book for class. This question sparks Menand to contemplate the three fundamental theories on the role of college. Theory 1, Menand states, is the belief that college is essentially a “four-year intelligence test” (2). Subscribers of this theory believe that college weeds out less competent members of society and sorts individuals based on their skill set. Then there is theory 2.…

Part of the reason why I pushed myself to go into college was because it’s a known fact that getting a well-paid job without a college degree is rare. Minimum wage can barely help one survive. There are also statistics that people hear that even with a bachelor’s degree, one must obtain a higher degree in order to have a well-paying career. Though getting a master’s degree may be the main goal, the financial costs add up, making the journey a hassle rather than a beautiful…

There are more people than ever before attending college because of endless opportunities that it provides; me either. I choose CSULB to pursue my degree path. Beside those chances that college gives me, I also disagree with the CSULB education system. There are many schools that go straight to teach students about their major courses, while in CSULB system we have to complete the general education (GE) courses. Most of majors are called “pre-majors" at first, students have to complete at least 60 units with a C or better in order to declare a major.…

As Carneville states in his essay, “College is Still Worth It”, “the unemployment rate for all workers with college degrees is a quarter the rate for high school graduates.” Carneville fights the belief that in today’s economic state, college degrees are pointless. A college degree and higher education is exactly the opposite of pointless. Research has shown that educating our workers to a higher degree can improve our nation’s productivity and innovation skills. By not allowing more students to receive a higher education, it hurts state economies growth and development because businesses will turn away from the less qualified areas in search of the level of skill that they…
