In the beginning of the book, a plane with a group of kids crashes in the Pacific near an Island and the kids are trapped. At first, the kids like the idea of being without adults and choose a leader. Little do they know, survival is not easy especially when the “inner-beast” in a human kicks in to cause a free for all things where each person struggles to trust each other forming sides. In the book, Ralph is the oldest and chosen to be the leader. Already it is clear that Jack too wanted to be the leader; although they are twelve year olds and want to believe they are the most important of the pack. With immaturity in this somewhat civilized group, the boys, under Jack’s command, are on a hunt for a beast that Ralph claims does not exist. After lighting a fire and going to look for an animal to hunt, a ship passes by the island and the fire goes out which frustrates Jack causing him to punch Piggy in the face. Later on while they are sleeping, a plane blows up in the sky from the war going on and a man falls from the sky in a parachute and is dead. Ralph, Piggy, and Simon run in fear thinking it is the so-called “beast” Jack was talking about. At this point there is a bunch of conflict that has gone on between the children, which formed siding with others; symbolically, this is similar to how war is in terms of siding.
