She discussed how body language is a way of communicating and how others are able to make judgments. Ms. Cuddy also discussed the differences and characteristics of high and low nonverbal expression of power and dominance. Power poses help raise your testosterone levels and confidence while decreasing your cortisol levels. This exercise helps improve your ability to handle stress. The textbook definition of self-perception theory states that when individuals come to know their own attitudes by looking at their behavior and the context in which it occurred, it infers what their attitudes must be (p.252). In general, negative experiences, certain situations, beliefs, values, etc. help shape our perception of ourselves. These factors can lead us to make inaccurate inferences that can affect what we believe, the way we think, and our decision-making. Also, the way we react to pessimistic situations can have an extreme effect on how we live our lives. But if we take a few minutes and encourage ourselves, make ourselves “big”, we will feel powerful, our attitude will follow our behavior, and we will be able to tackle the task at hand. Power posing will come in handy when trying to pitch an idea to a group of peers at work, when you are interviewing for a job, or about to give a presentation, when you don’t enjoy public speaking. After you consistently practice this, you will become the strong, assertive, and optimistic individual you have always been. In the words of Ms. Cuddy, “You gotta fake it till you become it”. I love the last statement she made before closing, “tiny tweaks can lead to big changes. I am going to try and incorporate this type of thinking. I am also going to be more observant of my own body
