Its sad to say but I didn't, think that I would have made it to this extend in my academic career. Indeed, at the beginning I did not have any confidence, or pep in my step like most enthusiastic freshmen would have, knowing that their creating a new chapter in their college careers. I has insecurities only because, I was terrified of English. considering that it wasn’t my first language.…
A plethora of authors follow a guideline such as Faulkner’s famous speech to portray and create a goal for readers. There are many purposes behind an author’s motive to wanting to set a moral across all or to express oneself. However, even though an author has intentions to do so, it is critical for it to be executed well in order for the public to fully grasp the definition of what is being placed in their face. With so many backgrounds, it is limitless to how unique a writer a can be and what types of strategies can come into play. Like musicians, the notes have to be played right in order to be enjoyed.…
“The only way I can get anything written at all is to write really, really shitty first drafts” (528, Writing About Writing, Shitty First Drafts). Shitty First Drafts, a piece by Anne Lamott originally published in 1994 in her book Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life and latter in 2010 in the college textbook Writing About Writing, is an article embedded with rhetoric that spells out the writing method of the author and encourages the reader to adapt it to their personal use in order to improve themselves as writers. Throughout the article, Lamott weaves together her exceptional understanding of her audience with her word choice, humor, exigence, and constraints in order to fulfill her rhetorical purpose of convincing potential…
Lamott relates to her audience and other writers alike by revealing her own experiences with these similar feelings. First drafts remain an essential starting aspect of the writing process that everyone must undergo. Audiences who read Lamott’s essay will agree that it teaches readers to be more excepting of their own writing and thus confident in what they…
The writings of New York Times Best Selling author Stephanie Meyer are fundamentally unexceptional to those of Tamora Pierce due to the lack of technique, writing devices, and characterization in Meyer’s books that are cleverly worked into Pierce’s writings. Meyer’s books are not only written poorly, but portray a static, tiresome protagonist and a mind-numbing and repetitious plot in her four most popular works that make up the Twilight Saga. In contrast, Pierce has developed two fantasy worlds and provided a unique storyline for each of her twenty-seven novels. Genre and personal taste aside, the syntax and technique of Meyer is poor compared to Pierce’s seasoned writing proficiency.…
“Oh, my fault. Damn! I wasn’t supposed to know that, was I? I knew from day one sum’n wasn’t right about you, I just couldn’t put my finger on the shit. Mama always told me to follow my intuition.…
After reading a few essays by three different groups of people: The Doctors, the Nurses and the Patients. People hold different styles in almost every aspect in life such as types of music, clothing, colors, books, and films. So when it comes to different writing styles, then one can agree with that also. One just never thinks about it and with people having what they think is “good’ personal writing. Good personal Writing should include humor, graphic details, things I can relate to, and not too much gore.…
During this semester of English W131, I have experienced both accomplishments and setbacks while learning how to improve my writing skills. Throughout the course, I have learned that writing is not only about how much information is in the paper, but also about how well the writer’s thoughts are expressed throughout the text. Practicing many different styles of writing as I did in the class has helped me tremendously with my delivery in my writing. I believe that this course was one to prepare us for future writing courses with professors we will encounter who will give us feedback that may puzzle us because it will require more work and more thinking. Although I have had difficulty in the class, I do believe that I have learned from my mistakes and that I am finishing the course with stronger writing skills that will help me though the rest of my college career and life.…
There are good writers and there are good writers who work hard to become better. Mrs. Fiske, my English teacher junior and senior year of high school always told me that I was one of the best writers in my class but I could always be better. Spelling has always been one of my strong suits and I always get bothered when people can’t spell simple words. I’m pretty good at writing essays but I do not enjoy writing them at all.…
Learning to write When I attended elementary school, part of the curriculum was penmanship. There was a certain segment of instruction dedicated to penmanship rather than writing. We were given large sheets of oat colored paper with three parallel lines widely spaced. The alphabets were used to print and write in cursive using the midpoint, and upper lines for capital letters. The handwriting grades were based on neatness and readability.…
Through the following three essays, “Why I Write,” by George Orwell, “Why I Write,” by Joan Didion, and “A Way of Writing,” by William Stafford, a reader can interpret the importance of writing in daily lives. The three authors discuss the significance of writing and it has impacted their personal lives. I was most compelled by Joan Didion’s “Why I Write” because of its ability to encourage everyone to develop an interest in he topic.…
I am not the kind of person that can whip out a paper the night before or create a masterpiece from nothing, but I can write an essay or story without it being too much work. Due to all the reading I have done writing to me is almost as natural as talking. Also, I am quite good at knowing how to divide writing to make it less work. Some writers I have come to know write until they can't write anymore and that's when the stop, wearing themselves out in the process. When I write I pace myself knowing went to stop and when to pick it back up again.…
