What is Mr Birling’s personality portrayed as in the play?
Arthur Birling is conveyed as selfish when being questioned by Inspector Goole. He is a typical man who feels that their status should get what they want: which is why when being questioned he does not give away too much information and does not feel guilty for Eva Smith’s death because he felt he was doing the right thing for his business.
A key quote which demonstrates this....
‘A man has to make his own way- has to look after himself’
How is Mr Birling different from the younger generation? I.e Sheila.
Mr Birling does not find himself guilty and feels no remorse for the girls death as he feels he is not to blame, however he begins to worry about the reputation of his business later on in the play.
On the other hand the younger generation such as Sheila feel responsible for the girl’s death through there actions and have a better understand on how everyone is linked and what society can do to people.
