Slavery Northerners opposed slavery as a moral evil and accepted war as a necessary means to remove the "curse of slavery."
Different Ways of Life The North was an expanding commercial and industrialized section, based on free labor. The South was an agrian society based on slave labor and the plantation system.
Sectionalism Issues such as protective tariff, centralized banking, the expansion of slavery, free land in the West, subsidies and railroads, and state's rights.
Declining Southern Influence in Government South were disturbed by the economic growth of the North and growing number of non-slave states. The victory of Lincoln and the Republican Party was the "last straw."
Weakness in Leaderhship Extremists and agitators on both sides inflamed public opinion by distortions, exaggerations, and creation of misleading issues.
