Exporting
Do I have to be a full member to export?
Yes, full membership is required to export flashcards. A small, one-time fee is required for full membership. Learn more.
How do I export to Microsoft Word?
- Find the flashcard you want to export and click the download/export link.
- From the export formats list select “Word Processor”.
- You will be presented with a new web page comprised of a table representing the flashcards you had selected for export. From here you want to:
- From the edit menu of your browser choose “Select All”
- From the edit menu of your browser select “Copy”.
- Open Microsoft Word and start a new document.
- From the edit menu of Microsoft Word select “Paste”.
If you are using Microsoft Windows a nicely formatted table will be placed in your document. Word 2000 and newer have been tested, though it should work with older versions too.
This method does not currently work properly with Microsoft Word for OS X. If you are using OS X try exporting to Microsoft Excel.
How do I export to Microsoft Excel?
- Find the flashcards you want to export and click the download/export link.
- From the export formats list select “Spreadsheet”.
- You will be presented with a new web page comprised of a table representing the flashcards you had selected for export. From here you want to:
- From the edit menu of your browser choose “Select All”
- From the edit menu of your browser select “Copy”.
- Open Microsoft Excel and start a new document.
- Place your cursor in the first cell of the first row.
- From the edit menu of Microsoft Excel select “Paste”.
The flashcards should be formatted with questions, answer and hints in their own cells. Please Note: pictures will not work properly with all versions of Microsoft Excel.
How do I export to Adobe Reader?
You can create Adobe Reader flashcards documents through our printing facilities. See printing help
Can I export to OpenOffice applications?
Yes! To export to a text document use the Microsoft Word instructions. To export to an OpenOffice spreadsheet use the Microsoft Excel instructions.
How do I export to WinFlash Educator?
WinFlash Educator is an award-winning flashcard program that runs directly on your computer rather than on the web. You can obtain a discount on WinFlash Educator when you order it with a full membership in Flashcard Exchange.
To export flashcards so they will work in WinFlash Educator:
- Click on the flashcard file you want to export and then click the Export/download link under Activities.
- From the export formats list click the “Export to WinFlash Educator” button.
- In the File Download dialog that appears, click the Save button.
- The standard Save As dialog will appear. Select the location where you want the file to be stored and give it a name ending in .hc – e.g. multiplication.hc. Click the Save button. Your file has now been saved in the directory you selected with the name you entered.
- Next, open WinFlash Educator and create a new file into which to import the flashcards you have saved in the step above. Close the editor that opens on creation of a new file leaving the newly created file open.
- From the Educator menu select Import Content… Choose HandyCards for Palm/PocketPC as the Import Format and select the Overwrite Currently-Open file option. Click OK.
- In the Import From File: dialog window that appears, navigate to the .hc file that you saved in step 4 (multiplication.hc in this example) and click on it – this will enter it in the Filename box of the dialog. Click Open.
- A message will appear confirming that you have successfully imported your flashcard file. Click OK and your flashcards will be opened in Educator ready for your use.
How do I export to VTrain (Vocabulary Trainer)?
VTrain (Vocabulary Trainer) is an advanced flashcard program that runs directly on your computer rather than on the web. To export flashcards so they will work in vtrain:
- Find the flashcard you want to export and click the download/export link.
- From the export formats list select “Tab separated values”.
- You will be presented with a new web page comprised of the flashcards you had selected for export. Next you want to save this web page to your computer as a text file.
- Internet Explorer:
- From the file menu select Save As… You might be with a warning dialog box (screenshot). Click yes.
- Next you will see a file explorer dialog (screenshot). Change the save as type to Text File write a good file name and save it in a place you can find.
- Mozilla:
- If you are using mozilla you can use the same process described for Internet Explorer users. The wording will be slightly different but the process is the same.
- Internet Explorer:
- Open Vtrain.
- From the file menu select Import/export options. In the End of front area write the number nine (9) and in the End of back area write the number ten (10). Click ok.
- From the file menu select Import/export. Find the file you saved earlier and import it.
