Organization and Tags
What are tags?
Tags are keywords (single words with no spaces!) that represent a categories of flashcards. One of the first steps in creating a set of flashcards is to indicate what tags should be used to categorize the flashcards. Tags are useful for organizing and finding both flashcards that you have creates and flashcards created by others. Eventually you will find that tags are an interesting and social way of organizing sets of flashcards. Tags are currently a work in progress at Flashcard Exchange and will be extended in the near future. Search tags to get started.
Can I help organize the tag directory?
Yes! Whenever you add a card set you your favorites list you are given the opportunity to add tags. The tags you add effect the site-wide tag placement for that card set. Want to create a whole new area on the site? Simple! Find all the card sets you want in the new area and save them to your favorites list with a new tag. A new special area will be created to list your tag.
Additionally, any card set you add to your favorites list will be included on your personal home page. There is a link to your personal home page from your profile. If you build up your personal home page with the highest quality flashcards (both your own and other), your home page can become a starting place for others with similar interests and standards.
How do I use tags to organize my flashcards?
Tags are a way to categorize your flashcards. From my flashcards you can dice and slice your flashcard sets into different categories. Because a card set can have an unlimited number of tags you can organize your card sets in different ways for different end results. Here are some ideas:
- Organize your card sets by subject. This is imporant for sharing your flashcards with other users of Flashcard Exchange! If you are creating nursing flashcards you should consider putting “nursing” as a tag on your card sets as well as more specific subjects. This will allow people to find your work in a variety of ways.
- Organize your flashcards by time the class you are creating them for.
- Archive old card sets by date or time period.
- Tag all your most recent work with “current”. This will allow you to always find what you are currently working on.
This is just a sample. Tags are a tool at your disposal to organize your flashcards in the way that makes most sense to you.
What happened to the old directory?
The old directory was showing it’s age and has been replaced by the tag directory.
There are some redundant tags and some misspellings in other people's tags. Can you fix it?
Because tags directly reflects the vocabulary of users they can ben ambiguous. There is no control over synonyms and there will be misspellings. These limitations are accepted because the tagging system works 90% of the time and it is very easy to get started. See Folksonomies – Cooperative Classification and Communication Through Shared Metadata if you would like to read more about tags.
Can I put a space in a tag?
No. Tags are single keywords only. If you want to make a tag with more than one word simply run them together without a space. realestate is an example.
I messed up when I tagged my card set. Can I change the tags?
Yes. From my cards click on the card set you want to alter. On the following page click “Edit Properties”.
