The Film The Shawshank Redemption a about Andy DuFresne, an innocent man who is sentenced a life sentence after being framed for killing his wife and her lover. Once Andy gets to Shawshank prison he sees the how hope and fear can dramatically affect the outcome of any situation. People who fear often lack self-confidence and motivation making every obstacle harder. Allowing people just like Warden Norton and Heywood to use fear to control people with intimidation and violence. While hope can help people like Andy and Red believe in their self and help them to overcome difficult obstacles in their life. Fear and hope are opposing emotions while fear can hold you prisoner, hope can set you free. Which is why the tagline of the film is ‘Fear can hold you prisoner. Hope can set you free.’. Hope is essential for people to look forward and beyond difficult circumstances. Just as in the film hope helped get Andy break out of Shawshank. It seemed Andy didn’t know from the start that he was going to escape by tunneling himself out . In fact Andy seemed to not know he was going to escape Shawshank at all. But one thing Andy always had was hope, hope that he would leave the Shawshank. This is evident in how he had taken his money and saved it . Also, he had his good friend set up a bank account for his new identity. He kept this in hope of escaping although it changed a few times. At first it was just hope of getting out somehow, then it was escaping, for a brief…

Existentialism is focused on human existence and how to become fully human. For Kierkegaard, to exist means to stand out which was exactly what Andy did a few…
