One such watershed event that affected me professionally as well as personally was being selected to serve as an officer in the Air National Guard. After eleven years of serving as an enlisted member of both Active Duty Air Force and the Georgia Air National Guard (GANG), I applied and was selected for a commission as an officer in the GANG. At the time of my selection I was serving as a full time aircraft maintenance technician in the GANG, and I was earning a good salary while enjoying job security. Being selected as an officer meant I would have to resign from my full time job with the GANG; therefore, after my training was complete, I would be left without employment other than my new one weekend a month officer position. I had to bet on myself that I could secure a civilian job that paid just as well as my former technician position in order to provide for my family.
