dominated the spectrum and sometimes it was unassuming.1 Kroto and Smalley were so interested in this unknown C60 peak, they delayed their semiconductor program and just focused on figuring out what this is. Since Kroto and Smalley knew how to create the C60 molecule they began to think about a possible structure. The whole team had multiple talks about the possible structure, but what they finally decided on was that it was some sort of spheroid.2 This made Kroto think about the Buckminster Fuller’s geodesic domes.2 He checked out a book that contained all of Buckminster Fuller’s dome structures and began flipping through the pages.2 He began to think that maybe the structure contains pentagonal sides and not just hexagonal sides.2 It was not until a mathematician, whom Smalley had consulted earlier on about the structure, called Heath and said, “Tell Rick – it’s a soccer ball” that they had their final structure.2 The team decided to name the C60 molecule buckminsterfullerene after Buckminster Fuller since it had the same geodesic shape as one of his designs.1 Molecular structure of the buckminsterfullerene C60. While the Rice/Sussex group was the first to discover the structure, many other groups have found different ways to create the molecule. There have been many studies showing that laser vaporization of a lot of different carbonaceous target materials also yields a dominant C60 signal.1 For example the Creasy and Brenna group used carbon films and polymers such as…
