Conrad also experienced a great amount of guilt, because he had survived the boating accident and his brother had not. Berger tells Conrad, “kiddo, you got any idea how much energy it takes to hold the door closed like you do? That’s power. Your own personal power and nobody else’s”(Guest 100). Conrad spends so much time and energy trying to hold his emotions in, that he does not give himself any outlet. This causes Conrad to let everything spill out at once, and he loses control over himself. Expressing his emotions more frequently helps Conrad become more calm and put together. Conrad’s suicide attempt was meant to help him escape his pain, however it only resulted in causing more pain. Beth loses her oldest son, Jordan, to a boating accident. However, she also loses her other son Conrad when he becomes distant and isolated. Beth ignores her grief because she believes she is, “protecting (herself) from further grief, from any more facts of history that do not change; that cannot be changed”(Guest 34).This shows that Beth does care, but is so afraid to let herself feel the pain.
