Cat on a Hot Tin Roof Plot Summary (1958) It’s 1958 Mississippi, where the white man stills holds more power than the blacks, (which is still modern day Mississippi). We meet our first main character named Brick Pollitt, played by Paul Newman. A former high school football star, he spends a night at his football field, trying to relive his glory days while getting completely wasted. Yeah, when you are depressed, go to the sight of your depression with tons of beer. He falls and breaks his leg while running, so he returns home and drinks some more. His wife Maggie, played by Elizabeth Taylor, talks to him about their relationship. But, Maggie is most likely Brick’s sister, which is common among most residents of Mississippi. So, she asks…

Cat on a Hot Tin Roof Elia Kazan created a film adaptation in 1958 of Tennessee Williams’s original play titled Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. This film overall offers an expanded role for Big Daddy, and one scene in particular that clearly shows this extended role is the basement scene (interpolated just for the film), that proves to be very incongruent with Williams’s thoughts on the topics of homosexuality, communication, and narcissism seen throughout his play. Homosexuality, a topic evident in…

After same sex marriage became legal the amount of same sex ‘families’ increased but that’s because two single men might not be considered a family in society. The play “Cat on a hot tin roof” addresses a lot of these household barriers and that was made decades ago. In that time period (50’s) it was absurd to love someone of the same sex and one could be very mistreated for admitting such a thing. Luckily that is one thing everybody is in acceptance of today. Some might wonder why the laws…
