    of failure is not a universally positive motivator. In some cases it is neither positive nor a motivator. Failure may be described as the eventual and inevitable by-product of the expenditure of efforts to achieve success. A fear of failure has never been anything but an abstract to me, because I do not embrace failure as an acceptable outcome. Success may be attained by researching methods to achieve an action or by avoiding problems through observing failures of other people. In the study of machine tool technology, observance of others failures has benefited me when performing machining operations. Despite careful preparation, failures may still occur through no fault of the machinist. Even a master machinist may kill parts as cutting tools may break, castings may have unseen inclusions, segregation or porosity may cause undetected structural weakness, the forging process may cause cracks in the material, the milling machine or lathe may fail, or work-pieces may slip. Numerous activities may cause failures beyond the control of the machine operator. Machinists and many other occupations do not fear failure because they understand it is unavoidable. Machine shops allow a specific failure rate in the machining process because it is understood they will occur. Thus, fear of something that is inevitable is not useful to success. One need not look farther than the self-help isle at the bookstore to realize fear is negative rather than positive. For example, why…
