One Corpse Too Many is a mystery book by Ellis Peters and is the second book in the Chronicles of Brother Cadfael. The book is a murder mystery centered around an extra dead body amongst other dead bodies about to be buried. As there is no specific moral or theme highlighted in the book, I would say it’s not a great book for teaching a lesson. However, with the great characterization and way of immersing the reader into the setting, it is definitely a great book to read just for the sake of reading. The civil war between King Stephen and Empress Maud had been waging for years. It is the summer of 1138, in Medieval England. This makes the process of solving a murder more interesting, as there is no modern CSI. There are, however, good old observational skills available for use; Brother Cadfael, fortunately, has great perception skills. We see Brother Cadfael’s perception skills in action from the very beginning, with the revelation that he knew that Godith, a girl under the guise of Godric, a guy, was indeed a girl. Brother Cadfael is the main character in the novel. He is a monk, and therefore, a religious man. Aline Silward was a young woman of 19 when she pledged her loyalty to the king Stephen, despite the fact that her brother, Giles Silward, had pledged his loyalty to Empress Maud, the opposite side in the civil war. She is a strong, independant woman, although she also has a kind and loving side. Aline is actually the person who recognizes the extra corpse. Early on…

The walls were stained by the weather and had quite a few holes in them, causing the nights to be cold. The house also had no plastering nor a chimney, and the entire…

In pieces of literature, romance is often used in order to create a plot in which one or more characters must follow a path of actions in order to find their true love. A character’s discovery of his or her true love may occur early on or later in their journey. An author may elongate or stress the “journey” in order to create a climax where the tension between two characters reach a peak. Ethan Frome takes place during the winter in the town of Starkfield and surrounding rural areas. The harsh winter is crucial to the development of characters in the novel and also to overall theme. The winter causes the characters to become isolated and make decisions that they would not normally make.
