Perhaps the first thing that pops out in this advertisement is the abundance of gold coloring: her dress and jewelry, her complexion, hair and makeup, the palace hall, as well as the sunlight beaming into the hall through which she’s walking. While all of these shades of gold work together with the perfume’s color in order to endorse the product, they also create a mood within the ad — one of elegance, luxury, and wealth — which appeals to the emotions and desires of the intended audience. This ad targets middle and upper class women between about 18 and 40 years of age and uses this mood to appeal to their love for beauty, fashion, elegance, wealth, and class. The scene takes place in September of 2011 in the Hall of Mirrors inside the Palace of Versailles, a well-known, elegant location in France, which certainly adds to the mood created by the ad (Dior J’Adore). As she walks through this luxurious hall, the sunlight creates a glow and the rays beam in, making her the center of attention in the ad; this makes the eyes focus directly on her, illuminating her figure and bringing out the glowing, golden tones. The first thing I noticed when starting Muriel Barbery’s The Elegance of the Hedgehog, was that the characters of Reneé and Paloma mirror each other in many ways. In fact, when the point of view switched from that of Reneé to Paloma, I didn’t even realize until she said, “I am twelve years old,” which counteracts with Reneé being fifty four in the previous chapter.
